Homemade Deliciousness :)

Ava's Favorite of the Week: Green Peas!

Here is the "recipe" from my homemade baby food book .... for those who are interested!

Prep: For fresh peas--wash and shell peas. Discard pods. For frozen peas--no prep necessary.
Cook: Place peas (2 to 3 10 ounce packages, or 1 & 3/4 fresh) and 2 Tbl of water into microwave safe dish. Cover with saran wrap. Cook 6-8 minutes. **I only used a 1 lb bag of peas so only microwaved about 5 minutes.** Let stand 5 minutes. Peas are done when they can be easily pierced with a fork.
Puree: Place peas and cooking juices in blender (or food processor) and puree. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water as needed to develop a smooth texture.
Pour: Spoon into Fresh Baby trays. **I use plain old ice cube trays. I also use some of those little cups with lids--Gerber Graduates or something similar.**
Freeze: 8-10 hours or overnight. Remove from trays, place in storage containers or freezer bags, and return immediately to freezer. **Makes perfect individual serving portions--at least for now. Ava's tummy is still tiny:) **

Something neat...
This book gives you ideas on veggie combos that peas would be good to serve with and certain herbs and spices that would be good to mix in as well, once she is a bit older--this book suggests around 8-10 months, but I like the idea of keeping it simple.

Frozen baby food will stay good in the freezer for months, but for the sake of freshness the earlier you use it the better!

Homemade peas compared to store bought peas... mmm mmmm which would you prefer!:)

I don't think you really realize it until the two are next to each other. The homemade peas are definitely more nutrient packed!

Green beans. I will add more water next time ... these are a little thick.

Butternut squash purees beautifully!

I couldn't help but taste this stuff while I was making it. :) The squash was definitely my favorite!

And the consensus is .......

Lip-smackin' good!! :)

You're so great! I've had such good intentions with both of mine, but it just doesn't always happen. I did make a really good combination the other day - sweet potato apple. Just peel & chop fresh sweet potatoes and apples and cook together in the microwave and then puree with some water. Much the same as the other veggies you've done, I'm sure. Jude loved it!

Wow you are so good! And the difference is amazing from the pictures!!!! I would love to do that too.... maybe this summer when I am home everyday! Ugh! I am having a hard time keeping up now with everything.... don't think I better add anything else right now. :) Kudos to you though! Keep posting recipes and pictures! Great work! :)

As far as the sleeping questions... we got this book from the library by Tr@cy H0gg. I think it is the second one. It has suggestions for sleeping... the things that worked for us were to keep stimulation to a real minimum before bed... extremely simple. Also if she wakes up at random times during the night, supposedly that means she is hungry and not getting enough during the day. SO- we increased Allie's food amounts and it seems to really work! The other thing was if it is the same time every night, then it is out of habit and she is using you as a prop... she knows that you'll come in and comfort her and rock her or whatever... same thing with a lost binki- she knows you'll come in and give it back to her. We have to train them to put themselves back to sleep. I used to get up EVERY little noise ALlie made- especially on "my night"- so she wouldn't wake R. Now I let her talk herself back to sleep... she never really cries- and if she does- I go in and comfort her. The book says to pick them up- talk to them and comfort them, and as soon as you feel them relaxing again to lay them back down and pat them on their backs to sleep again. Not to hold them and rock them for a long time- because it sends them the message that everytime they cry- you'll do that. She said definately don't let them cry it out- they will loose trust in you. I didn't like that option anyway- it always broke my heart to try to let her cry it out....i never lasted on that one... :) It's worth getting the book and looking at it if you are interested in more. I can get you the name for sure if you want.... something about questions answered by the baby whisperer or something like that... it is a lengthy title.
Hope that helps! :)

ooooo Liz I am sooo inspired by you!!! Such a good momma you are. Maybe when Myas ready for baby food I'll find the time to make her home made baby food to. It does look sooo much better than that packaged crap. By the way I love your pictures you just posted of her outside. So cute!!!!
